The ICLR Conference

The International Conference on Learning Representations is one of the highlights of the AI and machine learning calendar. Starting out as 3 day event in May of 2013 as a collocated conference with AISTATS in Scottsdale, Arizona and with a unique review model proposed by Yann LeCunn it has grown into a major event with the most recent conference held in New Orleans in 2019 attracting over 2500 attendees across 50 countries and over 1400 papers submitted for review.

Looking back one could argue it’s success was already assured by the presence of Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCunn as co-founders and general chairs at its start, and Geoffery Hinton as an invited speaker. Bengio, LeCunn and Hinton would be awarded the A.M Turing prize in 2018 for their breakthrough work in the field of deep neural networks.

In 2020 the conference is planned to be held in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia. This is the first time one of the major AI conferences will be held in Africa, a choice that has been motivated by the difficulties that researchers from Africa and other nationalities experienced in obtaining Visa to conferences held in the US and Canada in 2019.
